Curling and cats
I had a blast when I curled in the Keithspiel back in March. So much so, that I'm gonna try my hand at curling this winter. I've signed up at Hammer's club (Hammer being Nail's lovely wife), and I'll be in the Friday night draws. At the very least, I'll get some exercise and meet some new people. I know my dad loved to curl, till he got sidelined with a bad back and foot.Pipes is in town today with Serdmom, but they're headed to the passport office as he is headed down Mexico way in a couple of weeks. The question is, will he return? Not an unreasonable question regarding my brother.
In the comments, it was suggested that instead of a dog that maybe a cat would be better suited. My big concern there is the litter box, mostly keeping the smell down, especially in a small apartment. Also, I've found it's easier to travel with a dog than a cat. And yeah, it is about loving something to pieces. Perhaps I'll call it George.

Oh you don't know anything about cats do you?! Cats are wonderful! I live in a small apartment. You get one of those litter boxes that have the lids. You can't smell anything until you take the lid off. Rose (my cat) has her litter box right beside the couch and it's no problem! Plus, cats are much cleaner and less smelly then dogs on the whole.
I also travel with Rose quite a bit. Now, I may just be lucky and have the best cat in the world, but the meowing is minimal in the 3hour car ride to Kingston and back. Plus, another beauty of having a cat is you don't *need* to bring them with you if you're only going to be gone for a couple of days. Nor do you need to put them into an expensive boarding kennel. This weekend we're headed to Kingston for a few days and all I have to do is have a friend of mine stop by once a day to make sure she has enough food and water. Rose will be great on her own!
I love cats. I think you would too. I could go on about the reasons you should get a cat vs. getting a dog but I think I've rambled enough for today.
LOL curling... silly Canucks :P
PS. re: cats... let me tell you a story Hobbes - I was at Safeway buying some groceries. Typical bachelor stuff, which included several frozen dinners (although I love to cook, I'm lazy some nights). The check out girl informs me I've gotten my "special" award coupons. It's for cat food and cat litter. I immediately start laughing. The girl is puzzled. "Your computer thinks I'm a single woman living alone with a cat," I explain. This embarassed the young cashier. Good luck with whatever you decide.
My vote is for the cat also. :) If you keep up with the litter box it isn't too bad, and cats are a lot less hassle than a dog. Cats don't mind being left alone in the daytime for the most part, dogs are rather needy. As was stated above, you can leave them for a day or two without problem, just leave food down. When I had a dog I had to kennel him a couple of times which wasn't cheap. My favorite thing in the world to do is to sit and read a book with a purring boat motor sitting in my lap. :)
