Angle Food Cake

Hopefully, I'll be able to write a post without going off on a tangent and keep it from being protracted. It seems I have a few baking obligations to fulfill in the next little while, as RJA's Cinnamon Buns are still in the queue. Also, I really should make something for him and Nail since their birthdays just past. After making Angle (sic) Food Cake today, I've a number of egg yolks left over, and sitting in the freezer. I'm sure I'll be able to use them up in an appropriate manner. For now, we have had an Angle Food Cake fit for Mme. Foran_Objet.

After some searching I'd decided on the Cooking For Engineers version, as it used granulated sugar instead of confectioners or super fine. Of course, doing this required an Angle Food Cake pan, as well as a sifter. YAY! TOYSIES! It also required a hell of a lot of eggs as I used 10 egg whites to get to the required 1.5 cups of egg whites.

Then I had to beat/whisk the egg whites into shape, or into a froth anyways. Mind you, I didn't have a whisk attachment for my blender. I wasn't really able to get the mixture whipped to my satisfaction, even after 25 minutes of blender action, hand whisking and then removing one of the beaters from my hand mixer. In the end, the whole think came out more like marshmellow fluff than what I'd expected based on the recipe. I had no choice but to damn the torpedoes, and go full speed ahead.

Surprisingly (most any first time semi success is a surprise to me), the cake turned out. The only real crisis was where to cool it? I didn't have a bottle that would fit through the tube of the pan, so I had to improvise. MacGuyver would have been proud. I really couldn't have asked for a more perfect fit.

Once everything had cooled, I removed the cake from the pan and delivered it, which entailed a nice drive. I really do need to learn to not take two lane roads, as I tend to end up chewing the steering wheel while following someone doing 50 in a 60 zone or hell, even doing the speed limit.

Regardless, the cake tasted much better than my steering wheel and was followed shortly after by dinner with M. et Mme Foran_Objet at the Black Swan Pub, which was mighty tasty. Mmm Triffle. I'll get that recipe from the relatives yet. Thanks again guys. =)

Anyways, I look forward to future attempts which will involve me actually having a whisk attachment. I'm also considering trying to use vanilla bean, instead of pure vanilla extract. From what I understand, the difference usually isn't noticable, however, in simple delicate dishes, vanilla bean is head and shoulders above the extract.
