Hey! Guy! Jesus called...
He wants you to fix your car!
I guess you had to be there. So, to catch up a little bit; things have been very busy. We went to Quebec City, and had a blast. The Singer had an awesome birthday (or so she told me. I didn't even sing). Now, we're in the middle of apartment hunting; a task which has essentially consumed me.
Thus far, the city of Ottawa is offering very little availability for October 1. The day after we are homeless. I've been calling every rental company in Renter's News, searching through craigslist, advertising on craigslist and kept my ear to the ground.
The results thus far are two viewings, and one scheduled viewing. We didn't fall in love with the first apartment we saw, which was your standard high rise, parquet floors view. It certainly was livable, but it just didn't strike us.
We did fall in love with the second place. It had a lot of character, and it's in a nice neighbourhood (1 block from 24 Sussex and 1 block from Rideau Hall). The commute might have been a bit longer for me, I would have done it happily. It has a large living space. It's bright and sunny, and there's even a dishwasher/washer/dryer in unit. We told the current tenant that we would take it, but that's really as far as we got.
Calls to the landlord went unreturned for two days, and we began to question our decision. I mean, if they're unwilling to return a phone call that would result in continued cashflow, what would happen if the washer flooded? By dinner last night, the only thing really keeping us tied to the property was the fact that we said we'd take it. Fortunately, we were saved from this as I called the current tenant and he'd been able to reach the landlord. The verdict... no cats allowed.
Well, if it's not clean enough for the cat, then it's not clean enough for us. Now, we move on and keep looking. In the midst of this all though, I'd lost sight of why we're going through this. It's not to save money, but because we want to create a home together and we'd do it even if it cost more. The Singer reminded me of this fact after a chat with Serdmom. One of the reasons I love that girl. =)

Well aren't you two just the cutest, happiest couple around. Maybe you should skip the apartment and buy a house... that would be fun!
hehe =) An apartment is enough fun for now. We're going to have a house warming; you should come!
Hmmm. Dumbass landlord. Guess he doesn't know it's illegal to tell you that you can't have pets. But, you don't want to antagonize your landlord either.
Good luck in your continued search.
Apparently (and I didn't know this until we looked into it last week), the landlord can have a no pets policy when you move in, but if after you have moved in you either acquire a pet or are discovered to have one, the landlord can't make you get rid of it. We weren't willing to lie on the lease and say we didn't have one already, and it was just a battle we didn't want to fight. Also, as Serdic said, by this point we had decided we weren't all that enthusiastic about landlords who were so difficult to get ahold of in the first place.
At the end of the day, it's their loss anyways. =)
I'm liking the house idea. There's one for sale down the street from us that looks great! I could even call my GREAT realtor and take a quick look for you guys. Of course, you'd have to move south, and a bit (a bit!) west but ... ! Seriously, Serdmom (as usual) is spot-on and how could she not be? She has a great son! Besides, you both could always move in with her until you found the perfect place! haha - kidding :)
/ducks as Serdmom tosses stuff at her ...
I'm always up for a party! Let me know when and where and I'll see what I can do. I love going to Ottawa and if the food is anything like last time... count me in!
Ps: Update more.
Yep, definitely their loss, and no doubt you'll find an even better place.
