Spring is sprung!
Well, we're getting there anyways. I've watched the snow retreat from the fields of the experimental farm at a hurried, lovely pace. What was a sheer sheet of white on Sunday is now the wonderful muddy brown of spring.
Instead of the -40C we were bathing in last week, we're enjoying positively balmy +10C this week. I also have to thank George W. Bush for extending Daylight Savings Time. I got to drive home from the late shift this week in complete light. As Voltaire said, "This doesn't suck!".
Winter is ending and none too soon. I had a taste of spring last week when I went to Kokomo, IN for the day. One of our longtime customers was retiring after working at a company for 34.5 years, and to celebrate, several of us were invited down for dinner. You see, I'd worked with her for three and a half years being their support liason. So I was quite honoured to be invited, and even happier that I could attend.
We departed from YOW on a twin engine Beechcraft. Chartered planes are a great way to fly! No security check, no line ups, and I didn't have to partake of a torrid two day affair with multiple international airports. Instead it was a 3.5 hour flight down, and a 2.5 hour flight back since we didn't have to land for customs. I didn't even have to worry about smuggling the ginger sparklers across.
The airport at Kokomo could barely be called that, but the gentleman working there was quite happy to accomodate us, and even agreed to be on call for our departure. You see, the airport there closes at 1900 and we were scheduled to depart much later than that.
Dinner was a simple thing, held in the back room of the Sycamore Bar and Grill. It was still great to have a chance to catch up with people I've not spoken with for two years. Speeches were given, food was eaten, and Samuel Adams was drunk. No, really he was trashed!
All in all, it was one of those rare days. I was even honoured in a small way as "he was the one who got to deliver the bad news, but he never once said it wasn't his fault." Yes, that's right. I rock!
Pats on the back aside, the flight back was passed mostly in silence as we were all tuckered out. A long, happy day behind us, we landed safely at 0100.
